Building the Strategic Framework for the Best Tourism Villages Network
Promoting Sustainable Development in Global Rural Areas
On December 9, 2024, the second annual meeting of the Best Tourism Villages Network, organized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), took place at Vinpearl Resort & Golf Nam Hoi An, Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. The event marked a significant step forward in shaping a strategic framework for the network, with members gathering to define the future of sustainable tourism in rural areas worldwide.
Ms. Zoritsa Urosevic, Deputy Secretary-General of UNWTO, stated, “This meeting in Hoi An reflects a strong commitment to advancing sustainable tourism while celebrating Vietnam’s rich history and culture.” She also highlighted that since its inception in 2021, the Best Tourism Villages Network has expanded to include 254 villages from 59 countries.
This initiative not only preserves cultural heritage but also underscores tourism’s role in economic development and improving quality of life. Through targeted support programs, UNWTO continues to assist member villages in optimizing their tourism potential.
Strategic Development for the Future
During the session, Ms. Sandra Carvão, Director of Market Intelligence, Policies, and Competitiveness at UNWTO, emphasized, “Tourism is a powerful driver for inclusion, empowerment, and cultural heritage preservation while fostering innovation and sustainable development.”
The meeting focused on establishing a strategic framework to support member villages through three main pillars:
- Best Tourism Villages: Recognizing exemplary villages for sustainable development and cultural heritage preservation.
- Upgrade Program: Assisting villages that do not yet meet full criteria to address weaknesses and achieve global standards.
- Network Connectivity: Providing a platform for exchanging experiences and best practices, while fostering public-private partnerships.
Outstanding Villages and Key Successes
Tra Que Vegetable Village (Quang Nam, Vietnam) was recognized among the 55 Best Tourism Villages for 2024, solidifying Vietnam’s position in sustainable tourism. These villages not only preserve cultural identities but also promote economic initiatives aligned with sustainable practices.
Notably, seven villages participating in the Upgrade Program successfully met rigorous evaluation criteria to be recognized as Best Tourism Villages. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of the program, which provides mentorship and resources for development.
Global Strategic Directions
The Best Tourism Villages Network aims to become a comprehensive driver of rural development through nine key evaluation criteria:
- Cultural and Natural Resources: Preserving and promoting unique local values.
- Sustainable Development: Integrating tourism into the value chain and minimizing environmental impact.
- Infrastructure and Connectivity: Enhancing facilities and accessibility for better visitor experiences.
The network also encourages innovation to address global challenges, from climate change to rural depopulation.
