Halong Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago Recognised as World Geological Heritage

(TITC) – Halong Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago, a Stunning Blend of Natural Beauty and Geological Significance, Earns World Geological Heritage Status

Busan, South Korea, August 2024 – The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) has officially recognized Halong Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago as a World Geological Heritage site. The announcement was made during the 37th International Geological Congress in Busan, South Korea, held from August 25th to 31st, 2024. This recognition highlights the unique geological and geomorphological features of this iconic destination in Vietnam.

Geological Significance of Halong Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago

Halong Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago is a remarkable example of tropical karst landscapes, encompassing all stages of marine submergence. The site features three main types of caves: old phreatic caves formed below the ancient water table, karstic foot caves created by lateral erosion at base level, and marine notch caves shaped by powerful sea erosion. Halong Bay is renowned for its advanced stages of marine subduction, while the Cat Ba Archipelago contributes significant geological value through its diverse terrestrial and intertidal stages.

The Unique Karst Terrain of Halong Bay

Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is celebrated for its mature karst landscape, which has evolved over 20 million years under humid tropical conditions. The area showcases a complete karst evolution process, including karst plains, funnels, valleys, peaks, and towers. The presence of Fengcong and Fengling karst terrains further underscores Halong Bay’s significance as a prime example of the final development stages of tropical karst.

Cat Ba Archipelago’s Geological Diversity

Cat Ba Archipelago, located at the western edge of the Halong karst field, features a unique form of karst sculpted by seawater erosion. This geological diversity is expressed through various rock formations, minerals, fossils, and sedimentary structures. The archipelago’s topography and geomorphology, characterized by the intersection of mountains, forests, and islands, contribute to its status as one of the most geologically diverse regions in Asia.

Ecological and Biological Richness

The Halong Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago region is also a biodiversity hotspot, featuring seven interconnected tropical and subtropical marine-island ecosystems. These include primary tropical rainforests, mangrove forests, coral reefs, and saltwater lakes, each representing ongoing ecological and biological processes. The diversity of plant and animal communities within these ecosystems is a testament to the region’s ecological significance.
