Reflections on Structure and Function of Argument: Introduction to Critical Thinking – HarvardX

In an age shaped by artificial intelligence, information overload, and constant disruption, the ability to think critically has become one of the most valuable leadership skills. Structure and Function of Argument: Introduction to Critical Thinking reminded me that great leadership is not defined by having the right answers, but by asking the right questions, constructing sound arguments, and remaining willing to challenge our own assumptions with evidence and reason.

For LuxGroup, this lesson is particularly meaningful. Over the past two decades, we have built a Group of Small Giants—independent companies united by a shared purpose rather than centralized control. Such an organization cannot thrive on intuition alone. It requires leaders who think clearly, communicate logically, evaluate evidence objectively, and make decisions based on sound reasoning rather than hierarchy or personal opinion.

One of the most valuable lessons from the course is the distinction between an opinion and an argument. Opinions express personal beliefs, while arguments are supported by reasons, evidence, and logical reasoning. Leadership decisions should therefore be judged not by who makes them, but by the quality of the reasoning behind them.

Why should we believe it? What evidence supports it? How does the evidence justify the conclusion? What are the strongest counterarguments? And how should we respond to them? Completing this course has reinforced my commitment to embedding critical thinking throughout our leadership culture. Strategic proposals are now encouraged to follow a structured framework: claim, supporting reasons, evidence, logical reasoning, counterarguments, rebuttal, and conclusion. This approach creates greater clarity, improves communication, and enables more transparent decision-making across the organization.

We will also continue investing in leadership development and critical thinking for every level of the company. Leadership is not simply about making decisions quickly; it is about making thoughtful decisions supported by sound reasoning. Organizations that learn continuously will always outperform organizations that rely solely on past success.

A Personal Reflection

This course has also challenged me as a founder. Over the years, experience naturally builds confidence. Yet confidence without critical reflection can easily become overconfidence. Effective leadership requires the humility to acknowledge uncertainty, reconsider assumptions, and remain open to better evidence and stronger arguments.

As LuxGroup continues to grow, my responsibility is not to have every answer. My responsibility is to build an organization where thoughtful questions are encouraged, diverse perspectives are welcomed, and better ideas can emerge regardless of hierarchy. That is how enduring organizations are built.
